Standing with Trans Youth Amid Rising Threats

HUD’s Retreat from Transgender Protections

A recent AP News article highlights a significant policy shift under the Trump administration, where the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has moved to halt protections for transgender individuals under the Equal Access Rule. This Obama-era policy was designed to safeguard LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination in HUD-funded housing. The rollback has led to the dismissal of discrimination complaints from transgender individuals, citing a lack of jurisdiction under new executive orders that define sex strictly as male or female.

A Nationwide Assault on Transgender Rights

This policy change is part of a broader pattern of attacks on transgender rights across the United States. From healthcare restrictions to educational limitations, transgender individuals, particularly youth, are facing increasing challenges that threaten their well-being and safety.

The removal of housing protections is particularly alarming, as it directly impacts the ability of transgender individuals to access safe and secure shelter. Without these protections, many are left vulnerable to discrimination, eviction, and homelessness.

Trans Youth: Disproportionately Affected and Vulnerable

Transgender youth are among the most vulnerable populations affected by these policy changes. Studies indicate that nearly 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+, with transgender youth facing even higher risks due to family rejection, discrimination, and lack of access to supportive services.

The absence of safe housing options increases the likelihood of trans youth falling victim to human trafficking. Traffickers often exploit the desperation of homeless youth by offering shelter, food, or a sense of belonging, only to coerce them into exploitative situations. The Polaris Project notes that transgender individuals are particularly susceptible to trafficking due to systemic discrimination and lack of protective resources.

70% of transgender people who have stayed in emergency shelters report being harassed, assaulted or kicked out because of their gender identity.

YSN’s Commitment to Trans Youth

At YSN, we are deeply committed to supporting and advocating for transgender youth. We recognize the unique challenges they face and are dedicated to providing safe, affirming, and inclusive services that address their specific needs.

Our network works tirelessly to ensure that transgender youth have access to secure housing, supportive services, and opportunities to thrive. We collaborate with partners to develop policies and programs that protect the rights and dignity of all youth, regardless of gender identity.

The rollback of protections for transgender individuals is a call to action for all of us. We must stand together to advocate for policies that uphold the rights and safety of transgender youth. By raising awareness, supporting inclusive services, and challenging discriminatory practices, we can create a more just and compassionate society.

YSN remains steadfast in our mission to end youth homelessness and to ensure that every young person, including transgender youth, has the support and resources they need to succeed.
