What It Means to Be a Backbone Organization in Youth Homelessness Work
Ending youth homelessness requires more than individual programs—it takes a coordinated, strategic approach that aligns systems, amplifies lived experience, and centers equity. At Youth Services Network (YSN), we proudly serve as a backbone organization for Minnesota’s youth homelessness response. But what does that really mean?
A backbone organization provides the infrastructure and coordination needed to drive collective impact. Rather than offering direct services, we bring together diverse partners—nonprofits, state agencies, youth leaders, and advocates—to pursue a shared vision: a Minnesota where no young person experiences homelessness.
Our work as a backbone includes:
- Convene and coordinate: We gather our network of members to align strategies, share data, and drive systemic solutions.
- Amplify youth voice: We ensure youth with lived experience are meaningfully included in decision-making at every level.
- Advance policy and practice: We advocate for systems-level change and support the adoption of best practices statewide.
- Ensure accountability: We track progress, surface challenges, and celebrate collective wins across the ecosystem.
When done well, backbone support enables all parts of a system to move more effectively toward common goals. At YSN, we’re honored to help connect the dots and keep the vision clear as we work to end youth homelessness together.
